Breeding history

The French nursery "Meiland" became the birthplace of the most famous variety "Gloria Dei". The gardener Joseph Rambeau, who had a special love for roses, gave rise to a business that became the work of a lifetime. He was continued by his daughter, son-in-law and grandson Francis. It was he who, in 1935, raised 50 hybrids from seeds brought from the United States. Examining the flowers that had just blossomed, the young breeder noticed a pink-yellow specimen. On the seedling, two of the three buds died. The famous "Gloria Day" emerged from the third.

During this period, the plant did not yet have the status and registered name, but it was very popular, it was sent from the nursery to many countries on the orders of breeders and gardeners. The established ties were disrupted by the war that began in 1939 and swept across Europe. Rose in different states gave their names. In her homeland she was named "Madame Meilland" (Mine A. Meilland), the Italians gave the name - "Delight" (Gioia), in Germany - "Glory to God" (Gloria Dei), in the USA - "Peace" (Peace). The rose was delivered to the USSR under the name "Gloria Day".

She became a symbol of peace - she survived a harsh time, flowers were presented at the UN Assembly in 1945. The variety has often won awards at competitions and exhibitions.

Reproduction methods

For several decades, the Gloria Day variety has remained in demand among amateur gardeners. In order to propagate a rose, you should purchase a ready-made seedling, and after its rooting and growth, use it as a mother plant. The most effective methods are grafting and grafting.

Propagation by cuttings

The method does not give 100% rooting, but with a favorable outcome, a rooted plant is obtained. To do this, they act according to the algorithm:

  1. In cloudy weather, cut parts of semi-lignified shoots of medium diameter.
  2. The tops are cut off, and the stem is divided into pieces 7-9 cm long.
  3. The upper cut on the handle is made at an angle of 90⁰ above the kidney, the lower one - oblique under the kidney.
  4. The leaves are cut in half.
  5. The cuttings are placed in a rooting stimulant solution for 5 hours.
  6. They are planted in boxes with a moistened soil mixture of peat, sand and sod land at an angle of 45⁰.
  7. Cover with foil or plastic containers.
  8. A month later, the rooted cuttings are freed from the shelter, the plants are grown and planted.

Rose watering is carried out twice a week

Reproduction by grafting

The method consists in using rose hips as a rootstock for the Gloria Day rose. Inoculated with a kidney or cuttings. In the first case, the bark is cut in a T-shape and a scion is inserted under it, consisting of a rose bud and a piece of a shield. After that, the stock is tightly wrapped with foil, leaving the bud open. Within a month, it will become noticeable that the kidney is developing. After complete engraftment of the scion, the film is removed.

Important! Reproduction by grafting requires skill, which can be obtained by using any crop as a scion and rootstock.

Planting and caring for the rose Gloria Day

The plant needs an area that is well lit by the sun, ventilated, but without drafts and northern winds. Preferred soil with a neutral reaction, air and moisture permeable, rich in organic matter.

Important! Planting of seedlings is carried out in May, after warming up the soil.

For the "Gloria Day" rose, prepare spacious pits 50 cm deep and wide, placing them at a distance of 60-70 cm. Drainage is placed at the bottom, and humus is placed on top. The plant is placed in the center of the pit, its roots are straightened and covered with soil. After watering, the soil surface is mulched with peat, humus and foliage.

Watering the seedling is carried out with warm water strictly "at the root". Twice a month, the soil near the plant is loosened, removing weeds. Top dressing is carried out several times - in the spring, organic matter is introduced under the bush, after the end of flowering - mineral complexes.

Pruning the Gloria Day rose for the purpose of rejuvenation is carried out in the fall, removing damaged and unripe shoots.

In preparation for winter, the bushes are covered with spruce branches, sawdust, boxes or non-woven material.

Important! They remove the protection from the Gloria Day rose in early spring, gradually removing all layers of the shelter so that the plant does not get burned.

Powdery mildew

The appearance of a fungal disease is signaled by the appearance of a white bloom on the leaves, which eventually becomes brown. The rose stops in development, does not form buds, and later on, parts of the plant turn black and die.

To combat parasitic fungi, fungicides are used, and the affected parts of the plant are cut out and disposed of.

Black spot

The pathology is characterized by the appearance of round black spots on the upper part of the leaves and on the shoots. After a while, spores form in their place, the leaves turn yellow and fall off. Rose "Gloria Day" loses its decorative effect, the bushes are completely bare.In the fight against black spot, preparations of copper sulfate are used and plants are supported with immunostimulants.

Rust

On heavy and wet soils, roses are often sore with rust. At the beginning of summer, red spots appear on the reverse side of the leaf plates, gradually turning black. The shoots darken, bend, the "Gloria Day" rose stops in development, stops blooming. To combat rust, preparations containing copper are used, and the affected foliage is collected and burned.

Pests

Pests can cause irreparable damage to the plant. The most common among them:

  • spider mite;
  • rose aphid;
  • leaf roll;
  • shield;
  • slobbering penny;

Reviews of hybrid tea rose Gloria Day Climing

Many gardeners note the unique characteristics and versatility of the Gloria Day Climing rose in their reviews, descriptions and photos.

Moskalenko Nina, 75 years old, Kozelsk
I bought three Gloria Day roses two years ago. One of them did not start, the other two turned out to be not bush, but climbing. I was even delighted with this circumstance, especially since it turned out to be easy to create support for the plants, and the landing site was chosen well. The bush looks just gorgeous - the flowering is so abundant that the support is not visible. And although it starts very late, it lasts until mid-September.

Orekhova Svetlana, 54 years old, Tula
I ordered the Gloria Day Climing rose seedlings in a specialized online store. I received them in the fall, and immediately planted them. Unfortunately, one specimen did not survive the winter - the frosts were strong, and the snow did not fall. In the summer, the second seedling bloomed, long shoots grew. The flowers are very beautiful, delicate, large. In the first year, support was not needed, and in the second they built an arch on which the rose looks great.
