DIY Finnish peat toilet

Peat dry closets do not differ in their intended purpose from traditional structures installed in public places, in the country, etc. Their work is aimed at the disposal of human waste products. The dry closet differs only in functionality. Peat is used here for waste processing, so this toilet has a second name - composting. Before choosing a peat toilet for a summer residence, you need to know that there are several types of construction, with which we will now try to figure it out.

How does it work

Liquid and solid waste products of a person fall into the lower storage tank of the toilet. The upper container contains peat. After each visit by a person to the dry closet, the mechanism takes a certain portion of peat for dusting. The process of processing sewage takes place in portions. Part of the liquid waste evaporates through the ventilation pipe. The remains of feces are absorbed by peat. The remaining excess liquid is filtered and drained in a clean state through the drain hose. After filling the lower container, the contents are discharged into a pit to form compost. After rotting with the resulting fertilizer, a vegetable garden is fertilized at the summer cottage.

Device, installation and operation

All peat toilets are arranged in almost the same way, as can be seen from the diagram in the photo:

  • The upper container serves as a peat storage. There is also a distribution mechanism for dusting waste. Peat is the main component for processing sewage. Its loose structure absorbs moisture, bactericidal properties get rid of bad odor, waste is decomposed to the level of organic fertilizer. Peat consumption is low. One bag can be enough for the summer season.
  • The lower container serves as the main waste storage. This is where the peat composts the fecal matter. We always choose the volume of the lower capacity of the toilet according to the number of people living in the country. The most demanded are tanks designed for 100-140 liters. In general, peat toilets with a storage capacity of 44 to 230 liters are produced.
  • The body of the peat toilet is plastic. The chair is equipped with a seat and a tight-fitting lid.
  • A drain pipe is connected at the bottom of the storage tank. A certain percentage of the filtered liquid is discharged through the hose.
  • A ventilation pipe goes up from the same storage tank. Its height can reach 4 m.

The composting toilet can be placed anywhere... There are no fundamental requirements here, since there is no need for a sewerage system, a cesspool and a water supply system. Even if the peat toilet is not installed inside the house, but outside in a booth, it will not freeze in winter due to the lack of water. With seasonal use of the toilet in the country, it is preserved for the winter. In this case, all containers are completely emptied.

Before using the compost toilet for giving, peat is poured from the bag into the upper container. The tank is about 2/3 full.

Attention! Each manufacturer indicates the maximum amount of peat for a particular model. It is impossible to exceed the recommended indicator, otherwise it threatens to break down the distribution mechanism.

Peat filling must be done carefully. Rash actions will disable the toilet mechanism, after which the peat will have to be scattered manually with a spatula.

Having visited any forum on peat toilets, you can always find reviews about the poor distribution of peat, even with a working mechanism. The only problem is the incorrectly applied force to the handle of the mechanism.

It is important to pay attention to ventilation. The air duct should rise above the roof of the building where the toilet is installed. The fewer bends on the pipe, the better the ventilation will work.

Attention! The lid of a peat dry closet must always be closed. This will speed up the recycling of waste, plus bad odors will not seep into the room.

Popular models of peat toilets

Today the Finnish peat toilet for a summer residence is considered the most reliable and comfortable, which is why it is in great demand. The plumbing market offers the consumer many models. According to summer residents, the following peat dry closets are considered the most popular:

  • Finnish peat toilets for a summer residence of the Piteco brand equipped with a drain with a special filter. The models are distinguished by their ergonomic design.

The stylish body is made of high quality plastic. Compact dimensions and special outlets on the rear side without protrusions allow the peat toilet to be installed close to the wall of the building. Plastic withstands negative temperatures, does not crack in winter when installed in a country house in an outdoor booth. The dry closet body is designed for a load of up to 150 kg. Equipped with a toilet for giving Piteco direct-flow ventilation, eliminating bad odors.
Among many models, the Piteco 505 dry closet is especially popular due to the partition mounted in the storage tank. It prevents solid particles from clogging the drainage drain. In addition, there is additional protection from a mechanical filter. The peat spreader mechanism is rotated by the handle by 180about, which allows you to powder the waste with high quality.
The video shows an overview of the Piteco 505:
  • Peat composting toilets from Biolan made using heat-insulating material. All models are resistant to sudden temperature changes.

Most Biolan models have a large capacity. This is a good option for a summer residence with a large number of people living or a country cottage. Usually, the volume of the storage tank is enough for the whole summer season. One emptying of the tank makes it possible to prepare ready-made compost inside the tank. At the request of the owners, the dry closet is equipped with a thermal seat, which allows you to comfortably use the product in winter.
Models with a separator have increased usability. Such a dry closet is made of two chambers designed to collect liquid and solid waste.

The collection chamber for solid waste is located inside the peat toilet body. The tank for liquid waste is located outside, and is connected to the general system by a hose. The filtered liquid is used to fertilize flowers or as a compost activator. All storage tanks are equipped with dispensers with odor absorption function.
  • Ecomatic peat toilet models presented on the market from Finnish and domestic manufacturers. All of them are made using the same technology. You can find out which manufacturer's model is better by visiting any thematic forum. Many users still prefer Ecomatic from Finnish manufacturers.

Domestic models are made of durable quality plastic. The body is not afraid of severe frosts. The dry closet can be installed in an outdoor booth in the country. The design feature is the seasonal air regulator. In warm weather, the regulator is switched to the summer / autumn position. With the onset of frost, the peat toilet regulator is switched to the winter position. This allows the composting process to continue. In the spring, there will be ready-made compost inside the compost bin.
The video is considering the Ecomatic model:

Continuous Composting Toilets

If most models of peat toilets can be moved to another place if necessary, then continuous-action structures are intended only for stationary installation. It is initially expensive to install a stationary toilet in the country, but over time it pays off.

The design feature of the continuous peat toilet is the composting tank. The bottom of the tank is made at a slope of 300... There is a grid of pipes cut along the inside of the tank. This design prevents contamination of the duct, allowing oxygen to enter the lower chamber. While using the toilet, a new batch of peat is periodically added to the inside of the compost bin. A loading door is installed for this purpose. The finished compost is raked out through the bottom hatch.

Advice! It is not profitable to use small, continuous toilets. The output is a small amount of compost and maintenance is more frequent. Small containers are suitable for a summer residence with a rare visit.

What is a thermo toilet

Now on the market you can find such a design as a thermo toilet from the manufacturer Kekkila. The structure functions due to the insulated body. The processing of waste with peat takes place inside a large chamber with a capacity of 230 liters. The output is ready-made compost. The thermo toilet does not require connection to water supply, sewerage, electricity.

The manufacturer of the thermo toilet guarantees that even food waste can be recycled, but bones and other hard objects must not be thrown. It is important to monitor the tightness of the lid, otherwise bad odors may appear in the room, and the composting process will be disrupted. The thermal toilet is able to function in the country even in winter. However, with the onset of frost, the drain hose is disconnected from the lower container to prevent the liquid from freezing.

The simplest version of the peat toilet powder closet

A peat toilet of the powder-closet system has a simple design. The product consists of a toilet seat with a waste storage container. A second tank is installed separately for peat. After visiting the powder closet, the person turns the handle of the mechanism, as a result of which the feces are powdered with peat.

Depending on the size of the accumulator, the powder closet can be stationary or portable. Small toilets can be moved anywhere you want. As it fills with waste, the container is pulled out from under the toilet seat, and the contents are thrown onto a compost heap, where further decomposition of sewage occurs.

Homemade peat toilet

Making a peat toilet for a summer residence with your own hands is quite simple. The most affordable option is a powder closet. Such homemade designs are made from a simple toilet seat, inside which they put a bucket. Dusting waste is done manually. To do this, a bucket of peat and a scoop are installed in the toilet stall.

A more complex model of a homemade peat toilet is shown in the drawing. In terms of dimensions, the design will turn out to be larger than the factory one, otherwise it will not be possible to ensure the tightness of the chambers.

The bottom of the lower chamber is made at a slope of 30about, with small holes drilled on the entire surface. They act as a filter. Liquid waste seeps through the holes. Peat is poured into the chamber through the loading window. The finished compost is discharged through the lower door.

Choosing a peat toilet for installation in the country

In principle, all peat models of any manufacturer are suitable for use in the country. If we specifically approach the question of which peat toilet is better for giving, then here it is necessary to be guided by the technical characteristics. For example, for a family of three, it is enough to buy a product with a storage unit within 14 liters. For a large family, it is reasonable to purchase a dry closet with a storage volume of about 20 liters.

Attention! The 12 L storage container is designed for a maximum of 30 uses. Tanks with a capacity of 20 liters are designed for use up to 50 times. After that, the compost must be unloaded from the container.

When choosing a peat dry closet, it is important to avoid fakes in pursuit of a low price. Low-quality plastic will eventually burst and the chambers will depressurize. In any case, all Finnish products are of high quality. The consumer is left to decide on the model, only guided by personal preferences.

What users say

Forums and user reviews always help to choose a suitable model of a peat toilet for a summer cottage. Let's find out what summer residents say about this.

Elena Sergeevna, owner of a summer cottage, Tula
The year before last I bought a peat toilet Piteco 505 for my dacha. All parts are made of high-quality plastic. The air ducts were slightly twisted, which gave certain problems to their docking. In my opinion, the lid on the toilet seat does not fit very tightly. Insects can crawl through the cracks. The peat spreading mechanism is working properly. In principle, I am satisfied with the purchase.
Igor S, Omsk
I have been reading about Biolan peat toilets with a separator for a long time. Two years ago I bought it for my dacha. For a family of four, a dry closet is not bad. During this period, he cleaned the storage chamber three times. I put a big plus on a warm seat. I am pleased with the economical consumption of peat, in contrast to the neighbors. They have a domestic toilet. I can say that at this time I am satisfied with the purchase.
