Distinctive features of Lima beans

Lima beans can be distinguished by three main characteristics:

  1. Butter-creamy taste is just the calling card of this species.
  2. The unusual shape of the beans - translated from Latin, the name sounds like a moon. At the same time, on the outer shell of the beans there is a relief similar to a seashell. That is why it was sometimes called navy beans.
  3. The largest beans among other varieties. Although there is a slight exception in the form of the Baby Lima variety, its beans are much smaller, but still belong to the Lima variety.

The origin of this variety has very deep roots. In the Andes, mountains of South America, its appearance dates back to 2000 BC. Small-seeded baby lima beans originated much later at the turn of the 7th and 8th centuries AD in Central America. Lima got its common name from the capital of Peru, from where beans were exported since the 17th century.

There are varieties of different shapes. Climbing or creeping plants grow in length from 1.8 meters to 15 meters. Also bush varieties from 30 cm to 60 cm. The pods are long, about 15 cm. The seeds grow up to 3 cm in length. The color of the beans can be quite varied, however, varieties with white and creamy beans are more common.

Baby Lima beans are renowned for their unusual flavor and creamy texture on the inside of the bean, while the outer shell retains its shape perfectly when cooked. Having tried this product once, people remain its fans forever. Its creamy taste creates the illusion of a fatty product, which is often lacking in plant foods.

Growing and care

Baby Lima beans love the sun, water and good nutrition, so they need to be grown in well-lit fertile areas, to ensure timely watering and feeding.

Slightly hatched seeds are planted, in the absence of danger, in the form of frosts. The plant absolutely does not tolerate them.

Important! Do not water Lima beans from a watering can over the leaves; watering should be very gentle on the soil, but not on the plant.

The soil should not dry out too much, but in cloudy weather there is a danger - to flood the plant. Therefore, you need to water not according to the schedule, but taking into account all the factors.

Top dressing is needed nitrogen at first, and phosphorus-potassium at the initial stage of fruiting. Weeding and loosening of the soil will not be superfluous activities. The plant does not differ in an abundance of harvest, the flowers bloom gradually one after another.

Harvest about 2 weeks after the ovary appears. The beans should be slightly unripe. Fresh beans are eaten immediately. Dried ones are stored and consumed boiled. However, green beans can be frozen or canned.

Production

Lima beans are still produced on an industrial scale abroad, however, in our country there is a large distribution brand that supplies cereals to Russia. This is the Mistral company.

Lima beans from Mistral are distinguished by high-quality selection of raw materials for packaging. Colored and white beans without debris and crumbled fragments. One to one in size and shape. Stylish and laconic packaging with an indication of all the substances contained, as well as a description of the preparation method. The palatability corresponds to the characteristics of the variety. Testimonials

Ksenia, 32 years old, Tver
I never planted this plant, in general, I did not like beans. My opinion changed when a friend tried Baby Lima beans. It's like mashed potatoes in water against it in milk and butter. Such a delicate creamy taste. I ordered seeds through the online store. She planted, grew a good harvest. It's not difficult at all, but most of all I was pleased that fresh beans are even tastier.
Vladimir, 55 years old, Saratov
After reading an article about the Lima variety, I could not resist planting a whole bed of bush varieties. I have been growing shell beans for more than a year, so there were no problems with leaving. The harvest was somewhat more modest, but the taste was incomparable with the taste of simple hulling varieties. The promised creamy taste and delicate texture made me a loyal Lima fan.
